Draw animals like a pro with Aaron Blaise

Long before I was a director and animator with Walt Disney Feature Animation, I was a lover of wild fauna. Growing up equally a fleck of a wild child in the swamps of s Florida, I would typically exist found running through the woods, barefoot of course, tracking animals. I would describe them in my sketchbooks or fifty-fifty collect the bones of creature kills and save them for afterward study.

It was always my dream to be an illustrator for National Geographic and to see the earth. Instead, I went on to Disney and a successful animation career, but I notwithstanding plant a way to pursue my dear of drawing animals past working on classic films like The King of beasts King and Brother Bear. Now I want to share some of the knowledge from my years of studying animals with y'all!

01. Observe start

(Prototype: © Aaron Blaise)

Before you outset to draw, cease and actually look. Take a moment to detect and written report the animal. How does it motion? Often you'll notice patterns of move. What's the brute doing?

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Can yous anticipate where information technology volition be adjacent? If it'south a hot 24-hour interval information technology might be heading for shade, for example. These sorts of details tin exist crucial in helping you capture details because animals often won't sit down even so and pose for you – specially in the wild!

02. Practise your research before you get there

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

I practice my homework on what animals I'll see in a item area. For instance, on a trip to Alaska I may attempt to acquire everything I can virtually grizzly bears, muskox and moose before I make it. I'll report books and do research to acquire well-nigh their muscles, skeletons and patterning. I'll fifty-fifty sentinel live webcams of an area to give me a sense of the surroundings. This data volition assistance me when I'm on location, and save a lot of time.

03. Take a mental movie

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Animals often don't sit nevertheless. To combat this I've developed a technique of taking a mental snapshot. I don't stare at the creature the entire time I'm drawing. Instead, I'll glance at the animal and and so quickly look away to my folio.

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

By doing this the last image of the animal that I saw is frozen in my mind. Combined with my research on anatomy, I'g able to get an accurate cartoon downward on the page.

04. Break the body up into sections

(Epitome: © Aaron Blaise)

This is an ascertainment I've made over the years. Nigh quadrupeds can be broken down into six main areas: the head, the neck, the front legs and shoulders, the trunk, the rear legs and hips, and finally the tail. This may seem like a simple ascertainment, but once you break the animal up this way y'all can overlap those areas in whatsoever orientation in space.

05. Understand basic comparative beefcake

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

People ask how do I know all these details about the animals I draw? The respond is: I don't! But I do know comparative beefcake. Most animals, particularly mammals, have all the same "parts" – just spaced out differently. And this is true of humans equally well. Once I understood that

I have basically the same parts as a lion, just in dissimilar locations, it was a eureka moment in my ability to describe them.

06. Lookout man your proportions

(Prototype: © Aaron Blaise)

Now that you understand that well-nigh animals take the same bones and musculus groups as you exercise, it's just a affair of playing with the proportions and getting those correct. This is primarily a matter of practise and repetition. Just once you start to get the spacing and proportions right, you'll be able to draw your subject field in any pose or angle.

07. Use black and white ink on midtone newspaper

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

How to enhance a pencil drawing of a lion's head with inks, bringing it to life:

a). Create a rough sketch

(Prototype: © Aaron Blaise)

First lay in a rough cartoon in pencil bearing in mind all the tips yous take already learned then far. It'southward okay to exist loose at this stage. This can give your work a dynamic border! You'll refine the image in the afterwards steps.

b). Add darks to the cartoon

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Side by side, use a brush pen and/or ball bespeak pen to lay downwardly the darks. Use waterproof ink here in case you want to add watercolour or a launder later. Endeavour to work in one consequent direction then you don't smear the ink.

c). Utilize white ink for highlights

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Now use a white pen (I like Sakura Gelly Curl pens for this) and add final accents and highlights. Considering you started with a mid- tone and not on white you can go lighter and make information technology popular! Use markers to add more than shading.

08. Stay loose and discover the menstruation

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

This is similar to step 6 if you want to get down a gesture of your pose right away. The fauna is likely to movement on you lot, so yous need to go the essence of the pose fast. If you're drawing a tiger or lion you need to get the activity and don't worry about every stripe and whisker. Instead, look for the line of action and rhythm to the pose.

09. Capture good silhouettes

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

The basics of good brute drawing are not that different from drawing a good homo character. You want their pose to read as clearly and concisely every bit possible. If your silhouette isn't clear and then the drawing won't be understood by the viewer. It'due south the same whether you're drawing an elephant, a comport or any other animal.

ten. Use overlapping shapes to create depth

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Once you're happy capturing the different shapes of your called brute, try overlapping them. This volition give your image a sense of depth and infinite in the frame. Properly overlapping each shape will give your drawings a sense of believability and life.

xi. Create action and drama

(Epitome: © Aaron Blaise)

Animals are living creatures. If you've been out in the wild drawing you lot'll have noticed that they're ever on the motility. You should be capturing this in your drawings too. While there'due south aught wrong with a good animal portrait (and then to speak), I've institute that images of animals in action always get a bigger response and have more touch on. Piece of work difficult to develop a sense of drama and life into your images.

12. Be mindful of light and shadow

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Proper use of low-cal and shadow in your prototype can aid enhance the feeling of drama that we discussed in step 11. I'll ofttimes push or exaggerate the lighting of nature to heighten that feeling. Used properly, a dramatically bandage shadow can deeply enhance the mood of your image likewise as give it a sense of time and place.

thirteen. Look for the big shapes showtime

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

A typical mistake that I see artists make is they get too caught upward in the details correct abroad. You don't need to do that. Instead, get down the large shapes first. For example, if you're drawing an elephant then discover the big "bean shape" of the body and lay that in, followed by the triangle or wedge shape of the head. Become their placement right and the residue volition come together apace.

xiv. Wait for emotion and personality

(Paradigm: © Aaron Blaise)

Whether drawing an animal that's realistic or cartoony, try to go as much personality as possible into the prototype. As humans nosotros wait for this naturally and gravitate towards information technology. Use that to your reward whenever possible. A trivial exaggeration or emphasis can get a long way.

15. Be selective when drawing your beast'due south hair and fur

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

In that location's no demand to be too detailed here. Yous don't need or desire to draw each and every pilus on an animal. Instead, make marks in key spots to suggest information technology. Places where the trunk bends are a great spot to indicate a hair break.
